The Energy Action Coalition, National Wildlife Federation and Southern Energy Network are very excited to announce the Carolinas Power Shift regional conference that will take place this October 16-18 on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This event will be packed full of inspirational speakers, educational workshops and panel discussions on a wide range of environmental and social justice issues, as well as opportunities to participate in community service projects and a possible town hall forum on climate and energy! We expect 800-1000 youth, including high school and college students, from all over North and South Carolina to attend. If we do get a town hall pulled together, it will be free and open to the public. Guests and attendees are encouraged to arrive and register Friday night for socializing and welcome events, so we can get Saturday keynotes and workshops started with everyone there! This Conference has been developed to ensure there are topics, forums and speakers to appeal to a wide array of progressive-minded young people. The trainings offered will be top notch and are sure to strengthen your skills and confidence in your respective interests.
We are excited to be offering a strong diversity of workshops, trainings, speakers, panels, and events at this Power Shift. There is truly going to be something for everyone and will have supporting events, speakers and workshops on: Slow Food, Energy and Climate issues, Lobby, Environmental and Social Justice, Non-violent direct action, and greening your campus, just to name a few categories of things going on at the Power Shift.
Travel - We are asking that as many campuses and organizations arrange for group transportation as possible. However, there will also be a limited number of spaces for people to travel to and from the conference using transportation that we have arranged. We anticipate being able to offer this free of cost, but may need to charge a small fee depending on demand. Please let Mike Cherin mikecherin@yahoo.com know if any members of your group will require transportation assistance.
Food: UNC Guidelines require that any food served on campus must be catered by their food provider, Aramark, or a supporting on-campus business. Due to the price of this, all persons are encouraged to bring snacks and their own food. There are multiple eateries and restaurants near UNC supporting Power Shift that provide inexpensive food and plenty of vegan and vegetarian options! A list of local restaurants supporting the conference will be provided at conference check-in. *EXCEPTION* - On Saturday, 10/17 from 12-2pm a Hunger Lunch (rice + beans + cornbread = $4) will be served in the Campus Y Lounge to benefit UNC's S.W.E.A.T. and Nourish International! Register TODAY at www.carolinas.powershift09.org !
Lodging - Free lodging will be available to those who wish to camp (Shakori Hills 20 minutes away from UNC campus) or sleep on floors, couches and spare beds of churches, students and community members offering up their accomodations . We are working to identify several hotels and motels that are willing to offer discounted rates to conference attendees as well. Contact Mike Cherin mikecherin@yahoo.com for more information about camping and/or hotels. We will let you know as other housing options arise. To post and/or search for available community housing, please visit our housing board:http://carolinas.powershift09. FREE Camping will be available to all conference attendees at beautiful Shakori Hills, located about 20 minutes from UNC's campus (driving). Shuttles will be available to go between the campsite and campus, as needed. Shakori Hills features all the necessary ingredients for awesome late-night music and dancing! Plus, once the music is over the dance tent serves as shelter for those who did not bring a tent!! *Note about American' s With 'Disabilities' support: We want to make the conference a great experience for everyone and accessible to all, so if you or someone in your party requires special support or accommodations (ASL interpreter, supportive housing, etc) LET US KNOW!
